What Not To Put In A Dishwasher?

Most people now have the luxury of owning a dishwasher. This is a great appliance for people to have if they find hand washing their dishes and utensils tiresome. You may not realize that many of the items you are placing in the dishwasher pose a risk for the appliance. Some kitchen tools do not really benefit from dishwashing and for personal safety some items need to be hand washed. Here is a list of five things you should not put in your dishwasher:

Knives: Sharp blades or utensils should not be placed in the dishwasher. Sharp utensils can cause damage to the inside of this appliance. Dull or blunt knives, such as butter knives can be safely washed in a dishwasher.

Crystals: You would be surprised that a lot of people will just toss their crystal into a dishwasher. This is a strict no-no, because crystal is very thin and delicate. The water pressure of a dishwasher can chip, crack or break crystal. The broken shards of glass could get into the dishwashing mechanism causing major problems with your appliance. And you will need to call in the appliance repair expert in Cambridge.

Cast Iron Pans: The weight of cast iron cooking pans can ruin the dish slots in a dishwasher by breaking them or bending them out of place. Cast iron should be washed by hand and dried immediately. Cast iron is a porous material and food particles that are stuck on will not come out in a dishwasher. Water will also causes rust spots on cast iron.

Wooden Food Prep Tools: It may be noted that certain wooden food preparation tools are dishwasher safe. These tools really should be hand washed. Wooden food preparation tools are very lightweight and the water pressure from the dishwasher will have them flying all around during the wash, and could potentially cause problems with your dishwasher.

Nonstick Pans: Nonstick pans are another kitchen item that will be clearly marked if it is dishwasher safe. The nonstick film coating on this type of pan will not remain on the pan if it is exposed too many times to the water pressure of the dishwasher. If the nonstick film on your pans comes completely off the pans you can no longer use them as they were intended to be used.
